12/3/07  WCSL soaked as record breaking downpour pelts Southern California

Friday saw record breaking rain and flooding to the Southern region of the state as WCSL sat out the storm at outdoor venues such as the grand opening of the new H Mart in Diamond Bar California.  Techs could do little more than wait out the storm as it passed by Saturday.  The sun did come out for the weekend and all continued as planned.

11/27/07  WCSL client Kevin DuBrow, dead at 52

Kevin DuBrow, best known for fronting the 80's heavy metal band "Quiet Riot" died yesterday at his home in Las Vegas. The cause of the death remains the subject of investigation. WCSL CEO Paul Doty had this to say Tuesday on Kevin's passing; "Out of all the national acts I've mixed front of house sound for over the last three decades, Kevin was one of the most colorful characters I've ever had the pleasure of working with.  Over a twenty year span from the 80's to the 90's I mixed FOH sound for Quit Riot on a number of occasions.  I remember the first meeting with Kevin in Turlock at "The Club" the first time they played there.  Kevin had a reputation in the industry at that time of being very hard to please, a bit of a butt to engineers and crew.  On our first meeting, Kevin walked out to the FOH console with me and said "Let's hear your drums".  I dialed up kick, snare, and hi hat through the system and Kevin stopped me.  He then said "Bro, if you can dial our drums like that, I know everything else is going to be just fine between you and me"  And it always was.  Years could go by between gigs and Kevin always called me by name when he walked into a venue."  Quiet Riot is credited with helping start the 1980s glam-metal scene and is probably best known for its take on Slade’s “Cum On Feel the Noize,” which appeared on “Metal Health” (1983) and eventually spent two weeks at No. 5 on Billboard’s list of hits. The album sold more than 4 million copies and is considered by many to be the first heavy-metal record to climb high in the pop charts.  “Although bands such as Motley Crue get the lion’s share of credit for popularizing pop metal in the 1980s, the first band of the genre to break through to a massive audience was Quiet Riot,” Billboard.com said yesterday.

11/21/07 Morning fire guts IHOP by WCSL

A morning fire gutted the IHOP by WCSL in Modesto on Wednesday morning.  The 3 alarm blaze snarled traffic on nearby Briggsmore/Cappenter overpass for hours as many of the areas streets had to be shut down in order to fight the blaze.  The IHOP had been an early morning tradition for WCSL owner's and employee's after night long shows.  It was also a popular place for business lunches with reps and clients.  Cause of the blaze at this time is unknown.

11/10/07  Tribute movie star and WCSL friend Andy Patchy has died

wcsl.org has confirmed this week the passing of Andy Patchy.  Andy played the Gene Simmons role in the movie "Tribute" that featured cameos by both Paul Doty & Andy Cross.  It appears Andy took his own life.  The sad news was confirmed by ex-Larger Than Life drummer Jimmy Newell in a conversation with the Doty's at this years Mama awards at The Gallo Arts Center.  Andy (featured on the movies poster at left) left the band just before Paul signed on as a production manager.  He rejoined the band briefly after the release of the movie and it's airing as an exclusive Showtime documentary.  WCSL then did a number of shows with Andy as the Gene in the band.

10/24/07  wcsl.org debuts 4th generation website

wcsl.org rolled out it's new 1000 pixel front page this week. The sites new streamlined look and feel is the beginning of it's 4th generation of overhauls since opening its doors in 1998. The new interface includes a top navigation panel that will stay with every page viewed.  You will no longer have to scroll to the bottom of a page , or use your browsers forward and backward controls to navigate to a new section of the site.  Watch for many new infrastructure changes in 2008 as wcsl.org moves into new technologies that will allow many new updates and features like podcasting and faster loading pages.

10/19/07 wcsl.org starts migration to high resolution with The Shins

In 2008 wcsl.org will move from a 800 pixel wide format to a 1000 pixel wide format for better viewing on today's high resolution LCD monitors.  The first page to receive the new width format is the posting of photos from the recent "Shins" show at The Greek Theater.  By years end, the wcsl.org front page will be formatted to the new width and internal pages will follow one at a time until the entire site has migrated.  Old pages from years past will remain in the 800 pix format.  "We keep an eye on the majors in the online industry like cnn.com and eBay.  Recently we've seen all the giants move to the wider format." Commented wcsl.org's webmaster on Friday. The bottom line for the web viewer will be a higher resolution viewing experience, and for those who's monitors don't fit the width, perhaps its time to think about upgrading."  Click here to view the new high resolution format.

10/17/07  wcsl.org reaches milestone, plans expansion

There are also two cover songs--a chilled-out version of ‘If I Were a Carpenter’, a song written by Tim Hardin, and a stirring rendition of ‘Wouldn’t It Be Good’, a song written by Nik Kershaw.  Join us for an evening of quality Jazz.

5/11/07 Engines as far away as Fresno battle to save Avalon

Ash rained 'like snow' on burning island

Firefighters struggled early Friday to protect a resort island's main city from a wildfire that forced hundreds of residents to flee on ferries as ash fell from the sky like snow.  The orange inferno loomed behind the quaint crescent harbor, landmark 1929 Catalina Casino and homes, restaurants and tiny hotels clinging to slopes above the waterfront. Dozens of fire engines from as far away as Fresno arrived through the night aboard giant military hovercraft from the Marine Corps' Camp Pendleton.  In Avalon, authorities used a bullhorn to urge people to evacuate and head to the beach. Visitors were directed to the historic art deco Casino until it lost power, while residents were sent to another harbor site.

5/10/07 Fire threatens home of Catalina Jazz Festival tonight

story.catalina.night.ap.jpg

A wind-driven wildfire threatened Santa Catalina Island's main city Thursday, and residents and visitors were urged to leave the resort isle.  Flames towered at the edge of Avalon at dusk as hundreds of people lined up at its harbor to board a ferry back to the mainland. Many covered their faces with towels and bandanas as ashes fell.  "The city is threatened right now," Los Angeles County fire Capt. Ron Haralson said.  The blaze scorched more than 500 acres, including a commercial building and several storage buildings, but no homes had been destroyed as of Thursday night.  Smoke hung over Avalon's quaint crescent harbor, the landmark 1929 Catalina Casino and homes, restaurants and tiny hotels that cling to slopes rising sharply above the waterfront.  The blaze erupted at about 12:30 p.m. five miles east of the island's airport.  WCSL will continue to update this story as it develops.

4/26/07 'Monster Mash' singer Bobby "Boris" Pickett dead at 69

Bobby -Boris- Pickett

Bobby Pickett, whose dead-on Boris Karloff impression propelled the Halloween anthem to the top of the charts in 1962, making him one of pop music's most enduring one-hit wonders, has died of leukemia at age 69.  In 1962, teen-age America still did the Twist when Bobby Pickett emerged with the Boris Karloff spoof that has since become the rock 'n' roll anthem of Halloween.  46 years later it's still a graveyard smash. Over the years, Monster Mash has sold about 4 million copies, easily one of the most popular novelty records of all time. Bobby's dates and tours were still available for booking on his website and myspace up to the time of his death.

4/25/07 Phil Spector trial opening statements due today

Opening statements are scheduled today in  Spector's trial more than four years after an actress was shot to death at Phil Spector's mansion.

Spector, 67, the legendary music producer whose "Wall of Sound" recording technique transformed the sounds of rock 60s, met Lana Clarkson on Feb. 3, 2003. She wound up dead in the foyer of his home with a gunshot through her mouth.

Clarkson, 40, best known for her role in the Roger Corman 1980s cult classic "Barbarian Queen," had gone home with Spector from her job as a nightclub hostess. He met her hours before she died.

4/23/07 Phil Spector trial to be televised

Rock 'n' roll legend Phil Spector will not be the only one on trial when opening statements begin in his murder case.  Cameras in the courtroom -- specifically television coverage of sensational trials in Los Angeles County -- will be on trial when the eccentric famed creator of rock's "Wall of Sound" is tried for the 2003 slaying of actress Lana Clarkson. A panel of nine men and three women is in place, and TV cameras will roll when opening statements begin on Wednesday.  Gavel-to-gavel TV coverage of trials in Los Angeles has been rare since the spectacle of the O.J. Simpson murder trial and the visions of Judge Lance Ito "danced" in viewers' heads in the mid 1990s. Observers, particularly those at Court TV, who will be televising Spector's trial, hope the coverage will be the end of the nearly 12-year backlash sparked by the circus of Simpson case. And they hope it will be the beginning of a renewed trust between judges and the media.  "There was a backlash following the O.J. Simpson trial, no doubt about it," said Tim Sullivan, senior vice president of Court TV News. "I can't say that it was exaggerated because it certainly happened, and it was felt across the nation. But O.J. was definitely an anomaly. We are very pleased that Judge [Larry] Fidler decided to admit cameras. We had been talking to him a long time, and we hope that this will be the beginning of normal relations between the courts in Los Angeles County and the press."

4/21/07  Pro sound community mourns the loss of PCM sales rep Justin Warren

We're sad to report that Shure rep Justin Warren was killed last week in a motorcycle accident.  Justin started his career in the pro audio world by playing guitar in and mixing live bands throughout the Baltimore/Washington DC area. He spent four years at the largest MI retailer running the audio department both in and outside the store. In 2002, after managing two stores in Maryland, he moved with that company to Northern CA to train the audio staff in all stores for the area on sales and technical knowledge. He spent the last year in outside sales while also managing the store’s internal workings. Justin had extensive experience in recording, live sound, and lighting as well as sales, customer service and merchandising.  Justin leaves behind four children.  WCSL extends heart felt condolences to friends and family and to the entire staff at PCM marketing.

4/20/07  A few words of sanity from the Motor City Madman

With former LA Times editor Tom Plate publishing his article "Let's lay down our right to bear arms" in the wake of the Virginia Tech tragedy, we at wcsl.org thought it only fitting to give time to the conservative right.  So, from this corner of the entertainment industry, ladies and gentleman, Ted Nugent!  We've published Ted's commentary in it's entirety.

By Ted Nugent

Zero tolerance, huh? Gun-free zones, huh? Try this on for size: Columbine gun-free zone, New York City pizza shop gun-free zone, Luby's Cafeteria gun-free zone, Amish school in Pennsylvania gun-free zone and now Virginia Tech gun-free zone.  Anybody see what the evil Brady Campaign and other anti-gun cults have created? I personally have zero tolerance for evil and denial. And America had best wake up real fast that the brain-dead celebration of unarmed helplessness will get you killed every time, and I've about had enough of it.  Nearly a decade ago, a Springfield, Oregon, high schooler, a hunter familiar with firearms, was able to bring an unfolding rampage to an abrupt end when he identified a gunman attempting to reload his .22-caliber rifle, made the tactical decision to make a move and tackled the shooter.  A few years back, an assistant principal at Pearl High School in Mississippi, which was a gun-free zone, retrieved his legally owned Colt .45 from his car and stopped a Columbine wannabe from continuing his massacre at another school after he had killed two and wounded more at Pearl.  At an eighth-grade school dance in Pennsylvania, a boy fatally shot a teacher and wounded two students before the owner of the dance hall brought the killing to a halt with his own gun.  More recently, just a few miles up the road from Virginia Tech, two law school students ran to fetch their legally owned firearm to stop a madman from slaughtering anybody and everybody he pleased. These brave, average, armed citizens neutralized him pronto.  My hero, Dr. Suzanne Gratia Hupp, was not allowed by Texas law to carry her handgun into Luby's Cafeteria that fateful day in 1991, when due to bureaucrat-forced unarmed helplessness she could do nothing to stop satanic George Hennard from killing 23 people and wounding more than 20 others before he shot himself. Hupp was unarmed for no other reason than denial-ridden "feel good" politics.  She has since led the charge for concealed weapon upgrade in Texas, where we can now stop evil. Yet, there are still the mindless puppets of the Brady Campaign and other anti-gun organizations insisting on continuing the gun-free zone insanity by which innocents are forced into unarmed helplessness. Shame on them. Shame on America. Shame on the anti-gunners all.  No one was foolish enough to debate Ryder truck regulations or ammonia nitrate restrictions or a "cult of agriculture fertilizer" following the unabashed evil of Timothy McVeigh's heinous crime against America on that fateful day in Oklahoma City. No one faulted kitchen utensils or other hardware of choice after Jeffrey Dahmer was caught drugging, mutilating, raping, murdering and cannibalizing his victims. Nobody wanted "steak knife control" as they autopsied the dead nurses in Chicago, Illinois, as Richard Speck went on trial for mass murder.  Evil is as evil does, and laws disarming guaranteed victims make evil people very, very happy. Shame on us.  Already spineless gun control advocates are squawking like chickens with their tiny-brained heads chopped off, making political hay over this most recent, devastating Virginia Tech massacre, when in fact it is their own forced gun-free zone policy that enabled the unchallenged methodical murder of 32 people.  Thirty-two people dead on a U.S. college campus pursuing their American Dream, mowed-down over an extended period of time by a lone, non-American gunman in illegal possession of a firearm on campus in defiance of a zero-tolerance gun law. Feel better yet? Didn't think so.  Who doesn't get this? Who has the audacity to demand unarmed helplessness? Who likes dead good guys?  I'll tell you who. People who tramp on the Second Amendment, that's who. People who refuse to accept the self-evident truth that free people have the God-given right to keep and bear arms, to defend themselves and their loved ones. People who are so desperate in their drive to control others, so mindless in their denial that they pretend access to gas causes arson, Ryder trucks and fertilizer cause terrorism, water causes drowning, forks and spoons cause obesity, dialing 911 will somehow save your life, and that their greedy clamoring to "feel good" is more important than admitting that armed citizens are much better equipped to stop evil than unarmed, helpless ones.  Pray for the families of victims everywhere, America. Study the methodology of evil. It has a profile, a system, a preferred environment where victims cannot fight back. Embrace the facts, demand upgrade and be certain that your children's school has a better plan than Virginia Tech or Columbine. Eliminate the insanity of gun-free zones, which will never, ever be gun-free zones. They will only be good guy gun-free zones, and that is a recipe for disaster written in blood on the altar of denial. I, for one, refuse to genuflect there.

4/14/07  Don Ho dies

story.vert.ho.ap.jpg

Legendary crooner Don Ho has died. He was 76.  He died Saturday morning of heart failure, publicist Donna Jung said.  Ho had suffered with heart problems for the past several years and had a pacemaker installed last fall. Ho entertained Hollywood's biggest stars and thousands of tourists for four decades. For many, no trip to Hawaii was complete without seeing his Waikiki show.  "I hate that song," referring to "Tiny Bubbles" he often joked to the crowd. He said he saved it for the end because "people my age can't remember if we did it or not."  Stars such as Lucille Ball, Sammy Davis Jr. and Frank Sinatra were often in the audience for Ho's shows.  Ho also became a television star and hosted the "The Don Ho Show" on ABC from 1976 to 1977. One of Ho's most memorable TV appearances was a 1972 cameo on an episode of "The Brady Bunch."  Besides "Tiny Bubbles," his other well-known songs include "I'll Remember You," "With All My Love" and the "Hawaiian Wedding Song."

4/6/07 KISS guitarist Mark St. John passes

Kiss 1984

We're very sad to report that Mark St. John, KISS' lead guitarist on the Animalize tour/album, passed away yesterday of a cerebral hemorrhage. He was 51 years old.  After Mark replaced Vinnie Vincent in the band, Animalize quickly sold platinum due to the success of the single "Heaven's On Fire" and heavy play of the video for the same track on MTV.  Animalize went on to be Kiss's biggest selling 80's album, having sold over 2 million copies.  WCSL sends it's condolences and deepest sympathies to the KISS family and friends.

3/24/07  Eric Medlin 1974-2007

WCSL offers heartfelt condolences and prayers for the Medlin & Force Racing family during this difficult time.  Eric Medlin, a funnycar driver for John Force Racing, died Friday after a crash in Florida while testing.  Eric was one of two drivers on the NHRA circuit local to the Modesto area (Oakdale), the other being Gary Selzi (Fresno).  Eric came on board with JFR after my stint with ESPN and TNN Motorsports as an audio Engineer.  During that time I was able to get to know John and most of the JFR racing family.  I know this will have a huge impact on everyone.  John has a reason for every driver he puts in one of his cars.  In many respects, Eric was like the son John never had.  While NHRA drag racing remains one of the fastest, yet safest forms of motorsports on the planet, this engineer hopes that NHRA will look into the new safer barrier technologies for the future.  God speed, to everyone at John Force Motorsports.

3/17/07  Voice of four decades of hits, and one of the largest selling albums of all time, found dead

The lead singer with perennial band Boston has been found dead at his home. Brad Delp, who was 55, sang the vocals on a string of mainstream rock hits from the 1970s, including More Than a Feeling and Long Time. Delp's powerful vocals was an integral part of Boston's ascent to rock superstardom in the mid- and late 1970s. The group's self-titled 1976 album is often credited as the top selling debut in American history with 17 million copies; the 1978 follow-up, "Don't Look Back," shifted four million in its first month of release.  Police in New Hampshire confirmed they discovered Delp's body after receiving a call from his home, an apparent suiside.  Delp joined the band in the early '70s after meeting guitarist, songwriter and producer Tom Scholz, with the group later signing with the Epic label.  Their first album, the eponymous Boston, was a huge success and the band picked up a loyal fanbase as they toured extensively, but Scholz had a reputation for meticulous production of albums and the slow progress made on successive releases effectively tore the band apart. Delp left the group in 1991 to work with former member Barry Goudreau, and was replaced on lead vocals by Fran Cosmo on the album Walk On. Delp did rejoin the group for the album's tour, sharing the vocal duties with Cosmo.  A new Boston album, with Delp back as sole lead singer was in the making, but no release date was ever given.

1/19/07 Doherty dies at age 66

story.doherty2.ap.jpg

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario (AP) -- Denny Doherty (pictured far left), one-quarter of the 1960s folk-rock group the Mamas and the Papas, known for their soaring harmony on hits like "California Dreamin' " and "Monday, Monday," died Friday at 66 at his home in Mississauga, after a short illness.  The group burst on the national scene in 1966 with the top 10 smash "California Dreamin'." The Mamas and the Papas broke ground by having women and men in one group at a time when most singing groups were unisex. John Phillips, the group's chief songwriter; his wife, Michelle; and another female vocalist, Cass Elliot, teamed with Doherty.  "Monday, Monday" hit No. 1 on the charts and won the band a Grammy. Among the group's other songs were "I Saw Her Again Last Night," "Go Where You Wanna Go," "I Call Your Name" and "Dedicated to the One I Love."

1/4/07 Music community & WCSL losses friend

Dave Wallace, long time friend of WCSL owners Paul & Leslie Doty, has died.  Dave died this week of Cancer, he was 52.  Dave worked with Paul back in the days when Paul was head engineer at Villa Recorders in Modesto, and was well known, loved, and respected in the local as well as national music industry.  Dave's career as a keyboardist spanned many years with many national acts, perhaps most notability Loggin's & Messina and The Manhattan Transfer, whom he served as musical director.  Dave also worked with artists like Don Henley, Cher, and Melissa Manchester to name just a few.  "His pitch was impeccable" commented WCSL CEO Paul Doty Friday, remembering Dave on his passing.  "He was a real take charge kinda guy, you would step out of his way at times, because he would just be right.  I don't know how else to explain it, but those who had the privilege of working with him know what I mean.  He will be missed."

1/3/07  WCSL ends year long celebration of 20th year

1/2/07  New mystery boxes arrive at WCSL

As the new year began at WCSL Tuesday, few people were back to work to notice the truck that unloaded a full load of large line array boxes (seen here in a low resolution camera phone photo).  "All we really want to say at this point is that we are in possession of a large scale arena rig for evaluation purposes." Commented CEO Paul Doty Tuesday.  No further details are available at this time other than the rig is a large scale McCauley Monarc system.  Stay tuned to wcsl.org for further details on this story as it develops.

1/1/07  WCSL chooses 4800's for 2007 season

This year WCSL has incorporated a number of new dbx 4800 drive racks in their main sound rigs.  "We did extensive testing last year at a number of arena shows with the 4800 before making the investment" commented company CEO Paul Doty at the beginning of the year.  "There's very few units at this point that can compete with the sound quality of the 4800's, no less beat it.  Of all the units we considered last year, the 4800 was by far the biggest bang for the buck."  Listen for yourself in 2007 by catching a listen of one of WCSL's Monarc Line Array systems at a coliseum or arena near you, or better yet, call today and talk with WCSL's design engineers Matt or Andy Cross to find out what Driverack can do for your church or club installation.
