Modesto Rocks!  Heat doesn't keep X-Fest crowds away

X marked the hot spot in Modesto as thousands of people came, sweated and partied at Xclamation Festival. Despite near record-setting heat, eager revelers flooded downtown streets by the thousands for the seventh annual X-Fest. The outdoor music festival drew a latearriving crowd, thanks largely to the 111-degree heat at 5 p.m., when the gates opened. "It's hot but it's worth it," said Salida resident and first-time X-Fest-goer Espie Huizard. "Everyone from everywhere is here, so we thought we might as well go here, too." Event promoter Chris Ricci said ticket sales were up this year from last year. "We're happy with the crowd," he said. As the music kicked off at 6 p.m., people sought the shade, cooling themselves with paper fans and spray bottles. The day's first performers played before nearly empty streets. "Thank you, three," said indie artist Micah P. Hinson to the three people in front of the Devil in the Woods Stage. "You're very generous, Modesto."An hour and a half later when the night's first headliner, Vanilla Ice, took the stage, the crowd was packed in and stretched half a block in both directions. The former squeaky-clean rapper had a hardcore, rap-metal attitude — filled with expletives — and encouraged the audience to give him the one-fingered salute. This year's event had the most diverse musical lineup yet, including rap, rock, country, metal, electronica and indie. Still, the early evening's biggest crowds were for headliner's Vanilla Ice and Tone Loc. Los Angeles rapper Tone Loc, who had huge hits in the '80s with "Wild Thing" and "Funky Cold Medina," was surprised by the day's heat. But he said he is always touched when crowds come out and get excited about the music. "As a performer, it would be pretty hard to look out and see people singing along and not get excited," said Tone Loc, who has performed at Modesto's Fat Cat Music House & Lounge. "That's something you always dig." The country stage drew a smaller, but devoted crowd. Manteca resident Kayla Tullous came with friends and camped out in front starting at 6 p.m. "I love it," she said. "I've been here all night. It's awesome." About 250 to 300 people cheered country artist Brian McComas as he played. "It's about time there's country," said Modesto resident Scott Damin, a first-time X-fester. "Modesto is a farming community and country music is our roots." Many people in the crowd said they make X-Fest an annual pilgrimage. Modesto resident Deviana Stone has been to all but one of the street concerts. "I come for the music and I also like people-watching," she said. "I like that they have different kinds of music. Now it's more about the music."

Dennis pounds east coast as WCSL's Paul & Ashley Doty brave elements to bring color to Dreamcoat

As Hurricane Dennis did it worst to the east coastline this summer, WCSL's Paul & Ashley Doty did their best to bring color to Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" in the South Atlananta.  Paul served as lighting designer for the production and daughter Ashley pulled double duty as makeup designer and spot op.

The outdoor nature of the show brought it's own challenges in the midst of a hurricane to be sure.  The production schedule was pushed off so far that the first tech rehearsal became opening night.  We're proud to say that our tech rehearsal received a standing ovation.

NBC

WCSL provides staging and lighting for NBC's television series "Three Wishes" with host Amy Grant
Slated to air in the fall of 2005, Three Wishes (working title) is a new reality series that brings Amy Grant & NBC into small rural communities across America to grant them and select people three wishes.  The pilot was filmed in Sonora California.  NBC created a carnival atmosphere at the local high school and WCSL provided a mock-up fair festival stage and lighting rig.  WCSL's Paul Doty served as lighting tech for the concert footage sequences and Matt Cross designed the truss structure and various staging platforms for the band, tech, & camera positions.  WCSL faced horrific storm challenges as they pressed on in building the stage structure into the night for the next day's shoot deadline as the largest storm system of the year moved through the region bringing tornados with it to Sacramento & Manteca.  The crew was pelted with dime size hail and drenched with rain as the construction continued into the night.  Filming finished Saturday night during cold, but clear weather.  Both the network producers and WCSL staff were pleased with the outcome and look of the show.  "The shots looked great, and really made the effort worthwhile." Commented Paul on Monday.

Update 4/4/05: WCSL debuts both a flying Monarc rig for the Modesto Centre Plaza and a new video rig for the event.  WCSL rigger Paul Doty engineered a four point fly that allowed the rigging of two 1/2 ton arrays of Monarc MLA 3's which by all accounts, provided some of the best sound the venue has had since it's opening a decade ago.  "The Harvest Hall is a very difficult room to engineer for sound" commented owner Paul Doty on Monday.  "Flying is really the only answer in that building.  Your dealing with a very reverberant space with allot of acoustic problems in the lower frequency's especially.  We're able to get the results we do by implementing line array technology to keep energy off the walls to help with reflections, and flying the PA allows us to overcome much of the rooms other problems.  The tune-ability of the MLA3 cells is also a big plus."

Once again, WCSL rolls into Lakewood School for it's production of "Robin Hood".  2005 marks another year of quality production provided by........students. that's right, the WCSL staff takes a back seat to the students of Lakewood as we provide the coaching and direction, and they run the show!  Click here to see additional photos from Robin Hood.
